Ok, so this might seem a little pithy but I'm going to post it anyway.
Tonight Kieron Dyer will be missing from the Newcastle team after colliding with the advertising hoardings during a game. This follows Radzinski's potentially dangerous injury scoring what turned out to be the winning goal for Fulham against Arsenal last week.
Not only are these hoardings dangerous - there must be insurance implications when £35million worth of ego goes crashing into an 888.com commercial - but they are also an ugly aesthetic on the modern game. The introduction of moving advertisements make the situation even worse being a constant distraction to player and fan alike. It cheapens the game to have "CROUCH 6/1 TO SCORE NEXT" screaming from the boards while the game is in motion.
As there are increasingly less people in the grounds, the companies behind these advertisements will fight to keep this constant barrage of globalised nonsense streaming around the world.
Unlike goalposts, boots and, arguably, corner flags, these hoardings are superfluous to the game of football, they should be removed to a higher and safer location. Then we can get on with watching what is left of the beautiful game in peace.
