Dr Sarah James points out on Sky News that a 90% infection level would be required and, even if that is achieved, epidemiologists simply don't know if people will retain immunity - an unknown unknown.

Britain's population is 66.44 million (2018).
If the percentage of deaths in the population are equivalent to countries where Covid-19 is already rampant then at 90% infection Britain will experience 4.3 million deaths (at Italy rate) or 2.4 million (China) or 1.3 million (Spain) or 1.4 million (France).
Or a nice average of 2.35 million souls on Blojo's watch.

In comparison, Spanish Flu in 1918 killed between 50 and 100 million people worldwide out of a global population of 1.8 billion.
Today the world's population is 7.8 billion.
Although Covid-19 is not Spanish Flu, it is a similar pandemic and extrapolations range from around 200 million to 450 million if directly equivalent.
A BBC4 programme on pandemics (from 2018) - Contagion - predicts 880,000 UK deaths with a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) at 2% and a 43 million infection with no restrictions by government.
Although the Ro (the basic reproduction number) and CFR are difficult to determine in the early phases of a pandemic, these are the ballpark figures.

The government claim herd immunity can be reached if 60% of the population become infected - this is absolutely not supported in the academic literature and if if this fake were real it only reduces 2.35 million to 1.57 million.

My wife has a cardiovascular disease and consequently can look forward to a 10.5% of dying if she experiences Covid-19 (based on Chinese data) - although her age will reduce this probability slightly probably around 6% (but scant data leads to error bars).
